GeoPlaces V2 is here

Posted on

We are proud to announce GeoPlaces V2 today. Following screenshot tour quickly explains what has been updated.

Homepage

The homepage now features improved map with post indicators and includes thumb image in the bubble. Featured listings are added in this new version and they will be shown at higher priority throughout the site. Also the theme now includes basic events in this new version.

Submit a business / event

Submit a Business or Event form

(the screenshot above shows all the form fields of adding an event)

The business place / events submission form is now better organized and works just fine for adding either the business listing or an event. It will automatically show/hide relevant fields in the form.

You can now move the cursor on the map for exact place specification and also chose which map view to show by default.

If you are adding an event, add Registration details or if you are adding business listing, add special deals or offer separately and they will be highlighted on the details page.

As admin, you can disable/enable coupons and run occasional promotion and users will get discount while submitting a listing on your site on regular price.

This new version also features optional captcha for spam prevention (can be disabled from the admin panel)

Listing events

GeoPlaces Events List

Events are listed differently. As you can see above, if the event is added as featured, they will be shown first at the top and regular lists will be shown then after. The sidebar features event calendar widget so you can view events by date.

Upcoming and past events are shown separately and can be sorted like shown above.

Event details

Show Event Details

The events are shown in same structure but a bit differently than the business listing. Date, time and address are shown at the top right. How to register for the event is highlighted separately. (Please note, this theme does not handle event registration.)

Updated admin side functions

GeoPlaces Admin Options

Events are shown and managed separately (custom post type) in the admin panel.

In the backend, we’ve added bulk upload now. Simply prepare a .csv file of all your business data based on the sample CSV provided with the theme and import all your data at once. No more manually adding each event on your site.

Managing coupon is yet another thing we added in the theme now so you can run occasional promotion on your website.

  1. Bali Web Design says:

Nice features added, specially that bubble thumbnail one. Overall the best city directory theme so far.

  2. raja3141 says:

Good improvements, but i wish it would have Awesome if you have included the permanent listing feature for listings & report incorrect listing button+option to submit correct data

    Thanks

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

permanent listing is already added with this update :)

  3. Franco says:

Very impressive, well done to the team.

  4. Carl says:

Will we be able to set up a test site with this version?

  5. Tim says:

Gotta give it up, Bhavesh and the team really pulled though and made V2 the best I or anyone could ask for. Way to go guys!

  6. Shawn says:

    Nice work guys… for events:

Are the “up coming” events based on the event start and end dates or is anything still in the 90 day advertising window? Also are”past events”, events that are now over or expired ads?

For example on the demo, the first event listed was over on Oct 15th be is upcoming and featured still:

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

      Hi Shawn,

there’s nothing to worry about. Actually, we have to keep the demo online forever and if the events expire after one or two months, we’d need to update it every month or so.

Instead, we kept all the upcoming events as future dates (in years) for example, October 2012 to November 2012 etc.

In order to remove this confusion, we’d be showing years too later today in the listings :)

    2. Shawn says:

Also are”past events”, events that are now over by date but not expired (i,e,. still within 90 days ad period) or are they expired ads too?

  7. NS says:

    Woohoo!

You wouldn’t believe how often I’m checking for updates on here.. so glad it’s released!

    This is my tweet R.Bhavesh;

    //www.twitter.com/wpdezign

    Awesome work!

  8. Azree says:

why you didn’t put the contact option (to comment or the send message to the author)
i mean contact form is the most important thing

    1. Cristian O. Balan says:

      Right!

      1. Azree says:

my suggestion is… in the theme admin, put the option of

        * show comment form in single post
*show contact form (contact author) in single post
        * show both form (contact and comment)

        this for greater good

  9. Ahmad says:

Well done i love this template so much

  10. Smruti says:

Nice work but I found a few bugs – not sure if it just me
I even deleted the old theme and installed the new one

    – the street view shows the same location for all postings
    – I cannot add price under ‘manage Price’ in the backend
    – edit this post shows up on the right side of the listing when logged in – is this only viewable for admin or for other customers who login to view their listing – coz when you click on edit it takes you to the wp-admin backend

    cheers

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

      Thanks for the quick comment.

      1) Tried three different locations, they do show different streetviews

      2) Will check this out in a moment.

      3) yep, its for admin only so they can quickly edit the post without having to find out that particular post from hundreds of them. I’ts a feature, not bug :P

      1. Smruti says:

        Thanks for looking into it.
I just noticed one more thing – I’m viewing in on IE from work and the google map which shows on the details listing sidebar does not show up – gives an error at the bottom status bar.
I might email you my site to have a look at – I have over 200 post and dont want to lose all the post – and not sure what to do
        thanks

        1. R.Bhavesh says:

  11. Sri says:

    Awesome theme.

I have the same question as shawn about the past events.

Also, will the past events be marked on the map ?

Looking forward to buy this theme.

    Thanks

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

there’s no such bug. Check my response to Shawn above for further clarifications :)

  12. Kiran says:

Hi nice theme from you guys. I think V2 is better and stable now. Also nice promotion “Tweet to Win “. I also tweeted this to my followers.

    keep the working going.

  13. Nicu Al says:

Hello, it is a wonderfull idea to create a specific geolocalization theme.
    I have 2 questions>

This Geomaps Theme require an apy google map key or not?
I have allready a lsit of location which I want to introduce in a them like yours. It is possible to input a list of location (lat & long)?

    Thanks.

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

      1) Yep it does require google API key – which is absolutely free
      2) yes, you can bulk import them by specifying those values.

      1. Nicu Al says:

Great job indeed, but just two question more, please… for the moment :)

        (1) Do you have in mind to update javascrips used (googlemap) to api v3?
        (2) May i personalize the content of ballon (to put one / more link)?

        Thank you. Keep going!

  14. Jose says:

Hi, Bhavesh, you and your team are geniuses! Congratulations.
    This is my retweet.

(I don´t tweet too much, but a link is a link, don´t you think?

    José, from Perú

  15. Miamicpr says:

This is by far the best theme ever!!!!!! Upgrading was so easy!!
    Thank guys!!!

  16. Zipr says:

    Tweeted!!

And now the competition knows youre ahead !

Great job man , i really love Geo

  17. Ricardo Lamego says:

V2 looks really nice, sadly I still can’t use it.

Has anyone else managed to get it *fully* working on WPMU/Multisite or am I the only one with image uploading problems?
I’ve tried everything, Templatic staff have looked into it but image upload simply doesn’t work!

    Ricardo

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

In fact, our live demo of this theme *is* working on the WP multi site version. Please get in touch with us via helpdesk and we’ll be more than happy to help you sort out this issue.

  18. Noah Paul Fardo none says:

    I’ve retweeted it as well.

I’m eager to find out more about the template. I installed a test version, but by no means does it seem to have the full power of the screenshots that you’ve shown above. That BULK upload is extremely interesting.

Out of curiosity, did you try to upload the CSV file that I provided you previously?

    Thanks,

    NPF aka AJL ;)

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

We wouldn’t show a functionality which is not included in the theme. Would we? Multiple images can be imported while a user is submitting a place/event on the site.

I did forward CSV file you provided to our programming team and they *may* have used the one as per your specification. Ultimately, a best choice is finalized

      1. Alvin says:

“No more manually adding each event on your site.”
Isn’t this suppose to be a listing instead of an event ?

Can you ad an option to ad the Tags in bulk as well ? This would be great !

  19. Carl says:

Can anyone help me? I am trying to input the map for BRIGHTON, UK but whenever i enter the lat/long co-ordinates it gives me a area that is 20 miles or so away?
Is there anyone in the UK that can test for me to see what i’m doing wrong as i really want to buy this theme but want to be able to enter the maps with no problem.

    Cheers

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

Hi carl, the maps are handled by google. If google map generates the map correctly, the theme will show it just fine. Can you make sure to check the address on googple map site?

Also remember, with this new version, you can move the map cursor as per your wish.

  20. Pedro Silva says:

Carl, in the settings you can set the map zoom:
Geo Places > Design Settings > Google Map Settings > Map Scaling Factor > Number for Zoom.
Try something like 13. Thats what i´m using.
    Hope it helps

  21. Paul Masterson says:

I have tried the test and am very impressed…

Does it come with great documentation to match, like widget mapping?

    Paul

  22. emmanuel says:

Hi, i want to do a directory of specific kind of restaurants in all MX, can i do with this template?
i only want to mark 22 cities, not specifically the adress
like: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Cancun etc…

    thankk

  23. Owen says:

I second the need to upgrade to Google Maps API v3 since v2 was depreciated back in May.

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

Done. :) simply download the theme from member area again. Upgraded the API version

      1. Owen says:

        It’s still not v3

  24. VegasKev says:

I’m looking at a couple of templatic themes currently. I don’t want to be limited to one specific area. I have a huge project in mind and am curious as to whether or not I can use GeoPlaces theme for the entire U.S.? Is this possible? For example; I would like to have listings in Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, Miami, etc.

It seems as though this would work, however, before I make a purchase, i would like to know for sure. As well, I’m also considering getting the answers and/or the classified theme. On the classified theme, I’m wondering if you can make it so that if a subcategory exists underneath a parent category; when someone clicks on a parent category can it go to a page that lists the subcategories, rather than all the posts within the subcategories of the parent category. For example, if i wanted parent categories for cities, and then have the example categories that you have listed as subcategories???

Please assist me. I sent a contact form to your team yesterday witha phone number so you could call me if need be, just in case a phone convesation is easier to communicate than a comment box. :)

    Thanks in advance.

  25. Milo says:

Hi, is there a way that you can place the iDeal payment option in geoplaces for the dutch market, and if so on what time table are you thinking to do that.

    thanks

  28. Aurélien says:

    This template is AWESOME !

    It’s exactly what I need ! You rock !

I’ll buy it now and hope to win the contest.

    All the best,
    Aurélien from WordPress Channel

  29. Richard says:

    Greate theme!
The only reason i don`t buy it is because is not multi city.
Why don’t implement the search filter like real estate theme, thay way i could be multi city?

    1. Richard says:

      Comment:
When somebody ad a lsiting in the category form the theme show it alphabetically without differentiating the categories and subcategories.

  30. Jeff says:

    Looks awesome.

My question: Can you create a directory that covers the entire US or is this just for a city directory?

    Thanks

    Jeff

  31. Marc says:

What about a export function for the places, which I can use to upload on a different site. So it exports in the correct format etc

  32. André Siqueira says:

I am very interested in buying the theme, but I have some questions before.

It’s possible I use the theme for multi GeoPlaces cities using WPMU?

I already have a business guide my town and neighboring towns, and businesses are divided into over 100 categories, GeoPlaces support this number of categories?

Sorry for my English, I use google translator.

I’ve also given RT on twitter.

    Thank you for your Attention

  33. André Siqueira says:

Sorry, I forgot to ask if it is compatible with GeoPlaces BuddyPress?

  34. Daniel says:

Great Theme! I have retweeted this since I would LOVE to use this on my travel website for Colombia.

  35. Bob says:

    Hi,

Great new functions with the events !

Is it possible to have subcategories in the menu like for example in “restaurant”, to have “italian”, “chinese”…

If it is possible can you show an example in the demo please.

  36. Josh says:

    Hello,

I just downloaded the theme and am thrilled with the demo above, should be a perfect fit for my project. My only issue is that I am getting a nasty error when I try to load the site into WP.

    Internal Server Error

The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request.

Please contact the server administrator and inform them of the time the error occurred, and anything you might have done that may have caused the error.

More information about this error may be available in the server error log.

I have uploaded themes before without issue, and still can, but for some reason the Geo Places them creeps up to 100% then I keep getting this error.

I am pretty new to WP and am not sure where to go from here.

    Thanks
    Josh

  37. Costin says:

It’s possible to change colors to more than you show on the demo? If yes, how can I accomplish that?
It would have been interesting to have a color picker for easy color changing.

  38. Phyllis says:

    Truly Awesome theme. Great Work!

  39. David says:

1st of November where I am living and I am waiting with excitement for the announcement of the winners :)

  40. Andrew says:

Great work – this template is definately improving

    Some suggestions:
    – i have clients with a number of stores who want to use the bulk upload, however manually putting in the latitude and longitude of each store is too hard for them. Can the program automatically find the longitude and latitude following a bulk upload, just like it does when you add a listing – this would be very useful.

    – in the add listing page, the categories need to be ordered into categories and subcategories. At the moment there is just a huge list which is confusing for users when adding

    – desparately need support for more than one city. A great option would be to able to set the standard longitude and latidue for the map for each category, and then set up listings under location categories. That way when a location category is selected it would show the right city. This would be brilliant.

    – also it would be great to be able to choose to have the large map from the home page on the search result pages. At the moment you only get a small sidebar map. Having the large map on these pages would help to show the results better. At the moment you cannot change the widgets for the contents, only the sidebar.

    – there should be an option to remove the search boxes on the home page – i find these dont work well with my site and make it confusing for users. It would be great if this was a widget option so it would be removed.

    – it would be great to be able to search results by “popular” and “latest” – i noticed you changed it so that the oldest results are shown first, I liked it better when the newest results were shown first

Fantastic Template, with a few changes im sure it will be brilliant!

  41. Jermaine says:

Love the theme alot, but is it possible to integrate it with foursquare, if possible how can I do it ?

  42. Richard says:

    Nice theme!

Can i use it for a country?

  43. Duane says:

What image size would you recommend for users to upload for GeoPlaces Listing? I want to create a user-guide (FAQ) for my clients & want to advise re-images…

Download speed is an issue, seeing as Google now penalises sites for being slow!

  44. Rework says:

    Bhavesh,

Sorry, but I HAVE TO SHOUT !

Many people want to buy this theme BUT! Please :-

–> Make it multi-city. Many people wants to do a COUNTRY guide, not a CITY guide !

You are lucky that your rival are lagging behind with their version of business directory theme right now.

The reason I’m gonna wait for them is because they promise a country, not a city guide. But if your team can deliver a simple, workable country guide, I’ll buy from you.

And I believe MANY OTHERS will too!

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

We hear you :). Thanks for shouting.

One last update will be there of this theme and we are going to make this theme for multi city. Of course this is tough and will take some time but the final result will be worth the wait.

  45. Carl says:

Has anyone set a site up yet, would be good to look at a few finished one’s and see how they look? :>)

  46. Bob says:

    Hi,

It would be great that when there is a lot of places listed in a small area on the homepage map, to cluster them in one symbol with the number of places inside… not sure if this is easy to do…

  47. sameh says:

    Good day,

why you dont compile it with answer theme + videos .. will be fantastic

    //www.2basetechnologies(dot)com/base/bahrain/index02.html

he he hope you like the idea

  48. Alvin says:

So i see that there will finally be an update? Why do i need to read this in twitter and not on this website or in the support forum?
Please inform us a little bit more about the update , as many people have questions since you guys went on a small vacation.

A bit more communication would really be appreciated.

    1. R.Bhavesh says:

Hey alvin, unless we have a solid decision, or final decision, we don’t really publish anything on the blog. Twitter is a communication channel where one to one conversation can be done.

Anyway, we do agree that there are still something which can be done with this theme and we plan to update this theme with some important updates like MAP v3, multi cities etc.

No ETA right now but we hope to roll out new update in next 3-4 weeks.

      1. Owen says:

Great, glad to hear there will be an update very soon. Desperate to get Google Maps updated! Thanks for listening to our needs and taking action. This theme will be a killer.

        1. Cristian O. Balan says:

          We hope…

  49. Alvin says:

Multi-City , well thats good to hear , and i think 99% of the theme buyers are happy with this news.
I understand that if no solid decision has been made you wont announce this , but at least you can let us know that there will be an update soon which will fix some problems we have.

I really like Geo , and looking forward to work with it !

Keep up the good work guys !

ps; any ETA on the Events theme

  50. Azree says:

Nice, multi city n child category
social sign up? facebook? open id? yahoo?

  51. Cristian O. Balan says:

Please look to the maps into your listings via Internet Explorer 8…

    Example: //templatic(dot)com/demos/geoplaces/2010/09/13/sampan/

    :(

  52. George Makrakis says:

Having run through the single license theme I can say that when you will upgrade it to multi-city version IT WILL BE THE KILLER GEO THEME of its kind exist in the web! Please do it asap!

    Keep up the good work,
    George

  53. Sandeep Hegde says:

    Hi Bhavesh,

Can we use it on worpress mu ?

Say like we have a network of sites with domain(dot)com

    Then we have sub-sites like city1.domain(dot)com , city2.domain(dot)com

  54. Cristian says:

    Hi Bhavesh,
Will the next update also include searching by categories? Something similar to what you have in your Automobile Theme to allow users to search under a category like “Restaurants” and then filter down to “Types of Restuarants” located in a particular “City”

I’ve heard multi-city will be a part of the next release which is FANTASTIC! Will Category listing searches (as mentioned above) also be possible with the next release?

Thanks. Your theme looks awesome and at a fraction of the price of other competitors like edirectory

    Cristian

  55. dave says:

    Just a heads up

The bit under Search at the top right hand corner where it sys

    food, products

    Zip

Look at it in Internet explorer then look at it in firefox

    its messed up

You guys really need to check before you release themes

  56. Fredrik says:

    Hi

Why can we not use URLs for photos?

I do not want to force my visitors to upload anything like jpg or png

Please advise how I can solve this
    A plugin maybe?

    Thank you

  57. miamicpr says:

Go Team Templatic!!!!! I want to see is my site ready for TheShowcase?

//TheObituaries(dot)org The Obituaries LOVES Team Templatic!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I can’t wait for THE EVENTS theme!!!!!!!!!!

  58. Shawn says:

Hi R.Bhavesh, is the next update (multi-cities…etc) expected out before the new year?

  59. Carl says:

Shawn, he said it would be out this week or next so hopefully?

  60. Cristian O. Balan says:

I hope that does not come out as version 2.
So I hope in a version without bugs, perfect in every aspect and feature-rich.

Otherwise, if we continue at this rate would end up having a decent and complete version in 2020. :(

  61. Plamen says:

I am also waiting for the multi-city version, otherwise this is awesome theme as I see from the Demo. Keep up the good work and make us happy with newer version :)

  62. George Makrakis says:

Don’t say that Cristian, I think the multi-cities feature is vital for the theme to be complete. Otherwise all the effort produced by the team will not be so fruitful. The competition is very high in geo tagging area…

  63. F says:

Why can we not use URLs for photos?

I do not want to force my visitors to upload anything like jpg or png

Please advise how I can solve this
    A plugin maybe?

    Thank you

  64. Carl says:

Been told that the new version will be out by Saturday, can’t wait!
Owners of the previous version should have an email??

  65. Dee says:

How does one get their picture in the geo places review section. Does a visitor have to sign up or submit a listing to be able to have their pic show up? I didn’t want anything too complicated for the visitors. Really want people’s pics to show up when they submit a review. Looks like only a generic icon shows up.

If it is not an option that is my suggestion for the next version…

  66. Dee says:

    Another question,
Does geo places work on mobile phones, or has anyone tested it with wordpress mobile plug-ins like wptouch?

    1. tuna says:

can anybody of the team answer this question please, is there any plugin works for geo places to resize for mobiles&pads

      1. Vedran says:

None of them are compatible because of the custom post types. Regular (blog) posts will likely work, the rest probably wont.

  67. Jose says:

Awesome theme. I like it very much. One suggestion, it would be wonderful to make an option for it to work in iPhone, Android, etc but also in mobile mode.

  68. chuck says:

Pretty sure we are going to buy this, but just have a few questions. We would like to make this a national website with, say, 100 cities or so. I know that this only supports one city. The reason that we want to do this is so that we can sell advertising on a city by city basis. More sponsored listings = much more advertising revenue.

    1. Could we avoid all of this by having one featured listing per zip code – is this possible, or at least trivial with a little coding?
    2. If not, is it possible and practical to set up a WP network with multisite and do a different install for each city?
    3. If we did this would it be hard to have shared resources, like a common theme that could be edited in one place?
    4. Is there perhaps some setup that you could recommend that I am aware of?

  69. Anton says:

I’m afraid my comment will be berried under all previous ones but I have downloaded this theme and have some very crucial questions for me, like:
    1. how to enable new user registration (right now if user tries to register it says “New user registration disabled”)
    2. How do I control which listing appears on the home page
    3. How do I control which categories appear on home page
    4. What is the best plugin for banner rotating (in case there are more than one to be displayed on any given page)

I have about 200 listings on my website already and planning to increase to a 1000 in next couple of weeks so I need to know those answers before I make too much progress.

Your respond is appreciated in advance.

    Anton

  70. Anton says:

oh, forgot another thing to ask, how do I add a dropdown of cities to main nav bar?

    hi there,
who is currently using this plugin for their directory site, if you could post url that would be appreciated. When new version due to be released?

    THanks Benson

    1. Vedran says:

      Hi Benson,
You can check out the sites that are using our theme in our Showcase. Regarding the new version… GeoPlaces v3 is out for quite some time and v4 is just around the corner.

      1. benson says:

Is there a release date that has been confirmed, just wondering if it would cause less hickups to start with V4 rather tnan installing V3 then upgrade. Are upgrades included with licence. Thanks.

        1. Vedran says:

We still don’t have a release date for v4.Yes, all upgrades are free within your (one year) membership.

  73. Roy Smid says:

    Hi there,

same question for me, is there a release date on V4?
I would like to start with this template, but don’t want the hassle with updating from V3 to V4 if V4 is coming soon.

    Regards,

    Roy

    1. Vedran says:

      Hi Roy
GeoPlaces v4 beta should come by the end of the month. The final version will be released when we receive the GO light from you guys.

You can translate all our themes into German. To see how it’s done read the following tutorial
